2.10 John -- Living Water

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,

"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him" (Jn 7:37-38).

In the preceding chapter, Jesus was the bread of heaven. Now he is the fount of living water.  This teaching is a direct continuation of his conversation with the Samaritan woman in Jn 4.

"If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water" (Jn 4:10).

John then tells us that Jesus was referring to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which would occur later on the Day of Pentecost.
